“My intention is not to try and imitate but evoke and reflect, to portray an idea of the coastal landscape being an idealised space leaving room for an emotional response.”
Dublin born artist Paul Ryan is extremely influenced by Nature, particularly the Irish landscape, which features extensively in his paintings. Observing Nature from different perspectives his work reflects the ever-changing mood, light and colour of a familiar place. He is deeply driven by nostalgia which he finds, for example, in the texture of a weathered wall which has been beautifully transformed through time by the elements, and he exploits this in his abstract compositions, “Coastal Landscapes”, which are influenced by the Irish coastline and harbours.
In his semi-abstract pieces he wants to bring the viewer into the space rather than simply view a picture. These composites stem from a variety of observations juxtaposed to create unique and more personal compositions. Paul’s technique of using a combination of heavy texture and numerous thin, transparent glazes of oil colour, enables him to produce an intensity in his paintings.
Paul holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Fine Art (Honours) from Dun Laoghaire Institute of Art and Design. His paintings are in private collections worldwide as well as by corporate clients such as Wyeths, The O’Connor Group, Mount Falcon Estate and Westwood Health & Leisure. Several of his pieces have been purchased by the Office of Public Works and hang in State buildings.
